Privacy Tiers는 거주자가 자신의 사적·공용 공간을 자유롭게 선택하며 오갈 수 있는 구조적 장치다. 나는 “I am not anti-social, but I am selectively social”이라는 생각처럼, 공간을 통해 스스로 언제, 어디서, 누구와 관계를 맺을지 선택할 자유를 갖길 바란다. 이 Perspective에서는 Potato Alley에서 Privacy Tiers가 자율적 선택과 사회적 상호작용의 균형을 어떻게 가능하게 하는지 탐구한다.
Privacy Tiers are a structural device that allows inhabitants to freely navigate and choose between private and shared spaces. Inspired by the idea, “I am not anti-social, but I am selectively social,” it envisions a living environment where one can decide when, where, and with whom to connect. This Perspective explores how Privacy Tiers in Potato Alley enable a balance between autonomous choice and social interaction.
Tier 1: Private | 프라이빗 단계
가장 내부에 위치한 Private Tier는 완전한 사적 영역으로, 생활자가 혼자만의 시간을 보내거나 집중해야 하는 활동을 수행할 수 있는 공간이다. 이 단계에서 거주자는 외부와의 상호작용을 최소화하고, 스스로의 선택에 따라 온전히 고립과 휴식을 경험할 수 있다.
The innermost Private Tier is a fully personal zone, allowing inhabitants to spend time alone or engage in focused activities. Here, interactions with the outside are minimized, giving residents the freedom to experience isolation and rest according to their own choice.

Tier 2: Semiprivate | 세미프라이빗 단계
Semiprivate Tier는 친밀한 관계를 위한 공간이다. 가까운 가족, 친구, 혹은 소규모 커뮤니티와의 선택적 교류가 가능하며, 필요한 순간에는 사적 영역으로 돌아가거나 더 공개된 영역으로 확장할 수 있다.
The Semiprivate Tier serves as a space for intimate connections. Residents may interact selectively with close friends, family, or small community groups, while retaining the option to retreat to the private tier or move outward to more public zones.
Tier 3: Semipublic | 세미퍼블릭 단계
Semipublic Tier는 부분적으로 공유되는 공간으로, 새로운 관계와 사회적 상호작용을 탐색할 수 있는 영역이다. 이 단계에서는 거주자가 자신의 선택에 따라 다른 사람들과 교류하며, 동시에 필요시 사적 공간으로 회귀할 수 있는 유연성을 가진다.
The Semipublic Tier is a partially shared space where residents can explore new connections and social interactions. It provides flexibility to engage with others while maintaining the option to retreat to more private zones as desired.

가장 외부에 위치한 Public Tier는 완전히 개방된 공간으로, 지역 사회나 마을 단위의 교류를 촉진한다. 거주자는 언제든지 이 공간으로 이동하며 다양한 사람들과 관계를 맺고, 사회적 경험을 선택적으로 확대할 수 있다.
The Public Tier, located at the outermost layer, is fully open and encourages interactions at the neighborhood or community level. Residents may move freely into this space, forming connections and selectively expanding their social experiences.

Privacy Tiers는 단순한 물리적 경계가 아니라, 거주자의 자유로운 선택권을 실현하는 플랫폼이다. Potato Alley에서는 개인의 생활 패턴과 사회적 관계를 존중하면서, 필요에 따라 사적·공용 영역을 오가며 선택할 수 있는 유연한 주거 경험을 제공한다.
나아가 이 구조는 앞으로의 주거 공간이 단순히 거주를 위한 틀을 넘어서, 자율성과 사회적 상호작용을 동시에 가능하게 하는 새로운 생활 환경을 제안하는 기반이 될 수 있다.

In Potato Alley, inhabitants are offered a flexible living experience that respects personal routines and social connections, allowing them to navigate freely between private and shared zones. More broadly, this structure proposes a future of residential environments that move beyond mere dwelling, enabling both autonomy and social interaction as integral aspects of everyday life.
Designing Connection through Curiosity

Privacy Tiers를 통해 온전히 혼자 있을 수 있는 공간의 기본 구조를 제공하는 것은 중요한 출발점이다. 하지만 이 프로젝트가 목표로 하는 것은 단순히 독거인을 위한 집이 아니다. 히키코모리처럼 완전히 스스로를 단절하는 사람들에게는 Private 공간만으로 충분할 수 있다. 그러나 사회 구성원으로서의 원활한 사회 활동은 또 다른 중요한 가치이며, 건축에서 단순히 개인을 위한 벽과 성을 쌓는 것은 사회적 맥락에서 폭력적일 수 있다.
따라서 Privacy Tiers만으로는 충분하지 않다. 내성적인 사람은 여전히 방에서 나오지 않을 수 있고, 외향적인 사람은 Semiprivate나 Semipublic에서 떠들기만 할 수도 있다. 이 과정에서 가장 중요한 요소는 **‘호기심’**이다. 관계의 시작점 대부분은 궁금함에서 비롯되며, 공간 설계에서 이 호기심이라는 미끼를 어떻게 던질 수 있는지가 지속적인 연구와 고민의 핵심이 된다. 즉, 하드웨어적인 장치뿐만 아니라, 이를 촉발할 소프트웨어적 캠페인과 프로그램이 함께 작동해야 한다. 사회는 결국 인간 관계로 결정되며, 이러한 관계의 윤활유로서 호기심이 기능하도록 설계하는 것이 Potato Alley가 나아갈 방향이라고 생각한다.
Providing a foundational structure for complete privacy through Privacy Tiers is an important starting point. However, the project is not simply about creating homes for solitary individuals. For those who are entirely withdrawn, like hikikomori, Private spaces alone might suffice. Yet, smooth social participation is also a crucial value, and building mere walls or “castles” for individuals can be socially violent.
Privacy Tiers alone are not enough. Introverted inhabitants may still remain in their rooms, while extroverted ones may dominate Semiprivate or Semipublic zones. The key element is curiosity. Most social connections begin with curiosity, and a critical challenge in design is how to plant that curiosity in the space itself. Therefore, beyond hardware, software interventions and social programs are necessary. Society is ultimately defined by human relationships, and designing spaces that allow curiosity to act as the lubricant of social interaction is the path forward for Potato Alley.
