Potato Alley Project는 변화하는 사회적 환경 속에서 새롭게 정의되어야 하는 주거의 형태와 방식에 대한 제안이다. 이 프로젝트는 기존의 ‘주거건축(Housing Architecture)’이라는 틀에서 벗어나, 보다 유연하고 개방적인 **‘생활구역(Living Zone)’**이라는 새로운 플랫폼의 가능성을 탐구한다. ‘Potato Alley’라는 이름은 세 가지 개념적 층위에서 비롯되었다.
Potato Alley Project proposes a new interpretation of residential architecture, responding to the changing social and spatial conditions of contemporary living. Moving beyond the conventional framework of housing architecture, it explores the potential of a more open and flexible platform called the “Living Zone.” The name Potato Alley derives from three conceptual layers.
Couch Potato
‘Couch Potato’는 소파에 앉아 하루 종일 TV를 보거나 인터넷을 하는 사람을 유머러스하게 표현한 말이다. 이 표현은 게으름을 비판적으로 묘사하지만, 나에게는 그 자체로 현대인의 온전한 휴식의 형태로 느껴진다. 움직이지 않는 시간이야말로 생각이 자라나는 시간이며, 그 정적인 상태 속에서 새로운 아이디어의 에너지가 만들어진다.
Couch Potato refers humorously to someone who spends long hours watching TV or browsing the internet. Although the term often carries a negative connotation, I perceive it as a genuine form of modern rest.

‘Ideacouch’는 일상의 공간 속에서 영감이 태어나는 순간을 상징한다.
아르키메데스의 목욕탕, 뉴턴의 사과나무처럼, 사소한 휴식의 시간 속에서 깨달음이 비롯된다. 내게 있어 Couch는 휴식의 장소이자 사고가 촉발되는 무대이다.
Ideacouch symbolizes the moment when inspiration emerges from the ordinary. Just as Archimedes’ bathtub and Newton’s apple tree became sites of revelation, the couch represents a space where rest and insight coexist.
생활구역 (Living Zone)
Potato Alley는 거주 단위의 해체와 재배치를 통해 새로운 주거의 형태를 제시하는 프로젝트이다. 건물 내부에 집중되던 프로그램(LDK 등)을 해체하고, 이를 일정 지역에 분산 배치함으로써 하나의 건물이 아닌 서로 연결된 생활 구역으로서의 마을을 형성한다. 거주자는 생활자이자 이용자로서, 각 구역을 오가며 주거·업무·휴식의 경계를 스스로 설정한다.
Potato Alley proposes a new form of living by deconstructing and redistributing residential programs. Rather than containing life within a single architectural unit, it expands the idea of dwelling into a network of living zones. Residents — or rather, inhabitants — navigate between these zones, defining their own boundaries between living, working, and resting.

나는 ‘생활구역(Living Zone)’의 개념이 단순히 건물 간의 물리적 분산을 뜻하는 것이 아니라, 그 안에서 일어나는 생활 프로그램의 해체와 재배치에 관한 고민에서 출발한다고 생각한다. 이 프로그램적 재구성이 구체적인 공간의 언어로 표현될 때, 그 매개로 작동할 수 있는 개념이 바로 **‘Privacy Tiers’**일지도 모른다. 아직은 완성된 정의라기보다는, 변화하는 주거 형태에 대한 나의 개인적인 탐색에 가깝다. 다만 이 개념이 앞으로의 주거공간이 가지는 유연한 경계와 새로운 관계성을 설명하는 하나의 단서가 되기를 바란다.
I believe that the idea of the “Living Zone” is not merely about distributing buildings across a site, but about rethinking and rearranging the residential programs that define how we live. When this reconfiguration takes form in architectural terms, the concept that might serve as its structural and perceptual framework could be what I call “Privacy Tiers.” It is by no means a fixed theory — rather, a personal attempt to understand the evolving boundaries of dwelling. Yet, I hope this concept can offer a clue to how future living environments might embody softer boundaries and renewed relationships between people and space.

The spatial organization of Potato Alley is defined by a clear physical articulation known as “Privacy Tiers.” This system represents a structured hierarchy where modes of living are both divided and connected through architectural boundaries. The innermost area forms the Private Tier, where intimate activities take place, gradually expanding outward into Semiprivate, Semipublic, and Public Tiers. This hierarchy is not merely a spatial division but a visual and spatial expression of how inhabitants relate to the outside world. By structuring these layers through tangible walls while maintaining visual and spatial permeability, Potato Alley explores a new possibility of coexistence between separation and openness.
