A Scent Brand in a Hanok

Proust is a scent brand created by a perfumer. This hanok is its shop and showroom, where scent products are sold and perfume classes are held, from one-day classes to professional courses for people starting their own business. It also runs Proust Tea, a café serving classic French desserts and black tea.

The name comes from a passage in Marcel Proust's In Search of Lost Time about the countless scents given off by every kind of life. The client wanted to brand the space together with a partner branding team, and needed a space worthy of that brand.

An Alley That Survived

Proust matters as a project that repaired an old hanok and gave it a new life. But it matters just as much for where it stands. Ikseon-dong is an old hanok alley in the very center of Seoul, in Jongno, that happened to survive several attempts at redevelopment.

In the 1920s and 30s, the developer Jeong Se-gwon divided a large plot into small lots and built urban hanok homes for ordinary families. The small lots and narrow alleys made it hard to build anything new on a single lot. Lying between Jongmyo Shrine and Changdeokgung Palace, both UNESCO World Heritage sites, the area also had strict height limits, which made high-rise redevelopment hard to pay off.

In 2004, the area was designated for redevelopment, with a 14-story mixed-use complex in mind. For about ten years the plan stalled while the city moved toward keeping its hanok, and the neighborhood stayed frozen like a time capsule, since new building and extensions were not allowed. In 2014 the redevelopment committee disbanded, and in 2018 the redevelopment zone was officially lifted and the area was placed under a district plan that protects its history and character.

When Proust was built, young people had only just begun to rent hanok here. Cafés such as Sikmul, Geobugi Supermarket, Ikdong Dabang, and Yeoldudal had opened. The planner behind Ikdong Dabang went on to build the Ikseon-dada brand, which helped turn the neighborhood into what it is today. Proust was part of that beginning. It can be read in two ways: as part of gentrification, or as part of rediscovering the value of an overlooked place.

Quiet for the Eyes

Smell can be the weakest of the five senses, or the strongest. Because this is a space about scent, I kept the visual elements as minimal as possible. Still, the character of the hanok was hard to ignore. So the walls, floor, and furniture at eye level are as pure white as possible, while the timber columns, rafters, and beams in the ceiling, the symbols of a hanok, stay exposed to keep its atmosphere.

A simple, minimal space lets visitors focus on the products and on their sense of smell.

A Room for Tea

The space for drinking black tea is set apart as a separate room, so the aroma of the tea stays inside that room and keeps its distance from the scents of perfume making.
