Based on this philosophy, we propose private-cluster housing, designed for individuals to dwell fully as themselves.

The Evolution of Dwelling: From Family to the Individual
A home is more than a shelter—it is a vessel for life.
In earlier dwellings, Day Rooms and Night Rooms served distinct purposes: Day Rooms connected residents to the outside world, hosting guests, social gatherings, meals, and daily work, while Night Rooms provided private spaces for rest and personal life.
With the Industrial Revolution and urbanization, the separation of workplace and home became standard. The nuclear family—composed of a working father, a homemaker, and children—formed the primary social unit, and the nLDK (Living, Dining, Kitchen) layout became the global typology, organizing spaces efficiently to support the family’s daily functions.
Today, however, society has changed. Individuals, rather than families, have become the fundamental social unit, and homes designed solely for family life can no longer fully accommodate contemporary lifestyles. As single-person households grow and work, leisure, social connection, and personal retreat increasingly intersect, dwelling must evolve into spaces that fully embrace individual life, choice, and freedom.

주거는 단순한 집이 아니라, 삶을 담는 그릇입니다. 옛 주거는 Day Room과 Night Room으로 나뉘어, Day Room은 손님을 맞이하고 사교·식사·일상 업무가 이루어지는 외부와 연결된 공간이었고, Night Room은 거주자가 휴식하고 개인 생활을 영위하는 사적 공간이었습니다.
산업혁명과 도시화를 거치며 직장과 주거가 분리되는 직주분리가 이루어졌고, 핵가족을 중심으로 한 nLDK(Living, Dining, Kitchen) 구조가 세계적으로 보편화되었습니다. 남편, 전업주부, 자녀로 구성된 핵가족은 집 안에서 각자의 기능적 공간을 필요로 했고, 이 구조는 생활의 효율성을 담보하며 현대 주거의 기본 틀로 자리 잡았습니다.
하지만 오늘날 사회는 더 이상 과거와 같지 않습니다. 개인 중심의 사회가 형성되면서 가족 단위로만 설계된 주거는 현대의 삶을 충분히 담아내지 못합니다. 혼자 사는 인구가 급격히 늘어나고, 일과 여가, 사회적 관계와 개인적 휴식이 다양한 방식으로 교차하는 환경 속에서, 주거는 이제 개인의 삶과 선택을 온전히 담을 수 있는 새로운 형태로 변화해야 합니다.

In today’s society, the individual has become the fundamental unit rather than the family. Living alone is not isolation—it is a life of freedom and choice. Based on this philosophy, we propose a private-cluster housing platform, designed for individuals to dwell fully as themselves.
The concept draws inspiration from Takashi Kurosawa’s residential designs and reflections, reinterpreting societal challenges through practical architectural exploration.
현대 사회에서 개인은 더 이상 가족 중심이 아닌 기본 단위가 되었습니다. 1인 주거는 고립이 아니라, 자유와 선택을 담는 삶의 방식입니다. 우리는 이러한 철학을 바탕으로, 개인이 온전히 자신으로 머무르고 자유롭게 살아갈 수 있는 개실군주거(個室群住居) 형태의 1인주거 플랫폼을 제안합니다. 이 개념은 쿠로사와 타카시의 주택 설계와 사색에서 영감을 받아, 시대적 과제를 주거 공간에서 실험적으로 구현한 것입니다.
Make it Private Space and Residential Philosophy
Private Space and Spatial Organization
In past share houses, limited space often forced residents to live with strangers, sometimes using bunk beds to maximize occupancy. However, the fundamental function of a residence is to provide a space where individuals can be alone freely.
Ensuring personal time and solitude in Private Spaces—such as bedrooms and bathrooms—is a core principle. Housing assumes “being alone” as the default, allowing residents to engage socially and return to a private space to recharge. In Selected I, each resident is provided with essential private areas, ensuring the sustainability of the living environment.
Spaces are organized according to levels of privacy:
Private: Bedrooms and bathrooms for pure solitude
Semi-private: Shared kitchens, terraces, and laundry rooms, where residents may encounter neighbors within the building
Semi-public: Lounges and co-working spaces, where interaction with residents and even local community members is possible
This hierarchy allows residents to choose and move freely through spaces according to their needs and social preferences.
과거 쉐어하우스 형태의 공유주택은 좁은 공간을 이유로 2층 침대를 배치하여, 서로 알지 못하는 사람들과 함께 생활해야 하는 경우가 많았습니다. 하지만 우리가 주거에서 중요하게 생각하는 최소한의 기능은 자유롭게 혼자가 될 수 있는 공간입니다. 즉, 개인이 순수하게 자신만의 시간을 보낼 수 있는 **사적 공간(Private Space)**을 확보하는 것이 기본 원칙입니다. 주거는 기본적으로 “혼자됨”을 Default로 하여, 사회적 활동을 하고 돌아와 에너지를 충전할 수 있는 휴식 공간을 제공해야 합니다. Selected I에서는 개인이 침실과 화장실 등 필수 사적 공간을 확보할 수 있도록 설계하여, 주거의 지속가능성이 있다고 확신했습니다.
공간은 Privacy 수준에 따라 체계적으로 구성되었습니다.
Private: 침실과 화장실 등 순수히 혼자 있을 수 있는 공간
Semi-private: 공용 주방, 테라스, 세탁실 등 같은 건물에 사는 이웃과 마주칠 수 있는 공간
Semi-public: 라운지, 공유오피스 등 건물 외부 주민까지 만날 수 있는 공간
이러한 구성은 거주자가 자신의 필요와 상황에 따라 자유롭게 공간을 선택하고 이동할 수 있도록 설계되었습니다.

An Innovative, Bold Approach
The increase in single-person households is a clearly visible trend shaping our society. Many organizations and individuals have attempted to respond to this shift, yet truly satisfying solutions remain elusive. In a reality inevitably intertwined with economic logic, creating and presenting something genuinely new is never easy. While past statistics and know-how may seem to offer answers, often the truly innovative solutions emerge from the bold attempts of artists. Such efforts may be accidental, but this project offered the realization that when combined with thoughtful humanistic considerations, these attempts can lead to more practical and realistic answers.
1인 주거가 증가하는 흐름은 이미 명확하게 나타나고 있는 변화입니다. 다양한 단체와 사람들이 이에 대한 대응을 시도하고 있지만, 만족스러운 결과가 쉽게 찾아오지 않는 것도 현실입니다. 경제적 논리와 맞물린 현실 속에서 새로운 무언가를 창조해 제시하는 일은 결코 쉬운 일이 아닙니다. 과거의 통계나 노하우가 마치 답을 줄 것처럼 보이지만, 실제로 새로운 답은 종종 무모하게 시도하는 예술가들에게서 나오곤 합니다. 이러한 시도는 우연일 수도 있지만, 인문학적 고민이 더해질 때 더욱 현실적인 해법으로 발전할 수 있다는 깨달음을 준 프로젝트였습니다.
